The name of the project worked on across the habitats to implement hyperspace as a viable option for humanity to explore the stars in the hopes of finding a new, untouched planet to emigrate to.

It was named because the experiments at the beginning had folded space of only a few physical meters when everything moved from one platform to the one beside it.

Project SideStep had successfully moved inanimate and animate objects but had been debating the Charter's ethics in finding a human volunteer while not inadvertently revealing the project’s existence to the broader population for a decade. It was felt that until the project had something viable to demonstrate to the general public, announcing it prematurely would do more harm than good should something fail.
