As time passed in the habitats, the idea of love began to expand. Beginning with the pagan population, the types of love described by the Greeks were adapted to emphasize the different relationships that became more prevalent.
AGAPE — UNCONDITIONAL LOVE Agape love is altruistic, selfless, unconditional love. Those of the Habitats chose to think of this love as the love for all we are connected to by pure extension of living in the habitats.
EROS — ROMANTIC LOVE Eros is named after the Greek god of love and fertility. Therefore, it is usually associated with romantic, passionate, and physical love. It is an expression of sexual passion and desire.
PHILIA — AFFECTIONATE LOVE The Greeks defined this kind of love as “affectionate love.” In other words, it is the kind of love you feel for your friends and others that does not involve a romantic component. Both Alex and Kevin Hanlon had a philia relationship with Brandon Sheehan.
PHILAUTIA — SELF-LOVE Philautia is the love we have for ourselves; in its most positive form, it shows as self-compassion and self-care.
STORGE — FAMILIAR LOVE This type of love looks and feels a lot like philia – affectionate love felt between friends; however, this love refers to the strong bonds, kinship, and familiarity between people who are closely knit. Habitat residents would apply this to what were called families.
PRAGMA — ENDURING LOVE The ancient Greeks defined pragma as “enduring love.” Within the habitat, it refers to the long-term love shared between individuals that stands the test of time. A long-term romantic relationship would be identified as ‟eros pragma,” while a close relationship of many years that does not involve sexual or romantic tones would be philia pragma.
LUDUS — PLAYFUL LOVE Ludus is known as the “playful love.” However, a better way to describe it is the feeling of infatuation in the early days of romance. This has also been defined in polyamorous communities as ‟new relationship energy” or NRE.
